What is kith(ship)?
The name for The Kith Kitchen was inspired by Lyanda Lynn Haupt’s Rooted (which should be required reading for all humans), where she describes the original meaning of the word kith. You may have heard the word from the phrase “kith and kin” which typically means friends and family. She says:
“…kith is relationship based on knowledge of place - close landscape…where each tree and neighbor and robin and fox and stone is known, not by map or guide but by heart.”
With The Kith Kitchen, I hope that we all can develop kithship with the beings around us (human and non-human) and become rooted in place through food.
